Will GLP-1 Resistance Training Make Me Bulky?

Woman standing on a scale while looking at herself in a mirror during a weight-loss journey, representing body confidence and muscle preservation on a GLP-1.

One of the biggest concerns I hear when talking about resistance training with someone working on weight loss is, “I don’t want to get bulky.” Honestly, I completely understand where that fear comes from. Between social media, fitness influencers, years of conflicting information, and the pressure to look a certain way, it’s completely understandable why so many people hesitate to start resistance training. The good news is that preserving muscle while taking a GLP-1 and training to become a bodybuilder are two completely different things.

Remember, the goal isn’t to build the biggest muscles possible but simply preserve the muscles that help your body move, feel, and look the way you want it to. The goal is to give your body a reason to hold onto the muscle you already have while you’re losing weight. Think of resistance training as another tool that supports everything I’ve talked about so far. Protein gives your body the building blocks, while strength training gives your body a reason to keep that muscle.

Strength Supports More Than Appearance

While many people begin a weight loss journey because they want to look different, strength training offers so much more than just aesthetics. Preserving muscle can help improve balance, reduce the risk of injury, make everyday activities feel easier, and support your independence as you get older. Resistance training can actually still help create the toned, firm look that many people are hoping for. Preserving muscle while losing body fat doesn’t automatically make you “bulky”. You would have to train specifically to gain that muscle mass to make that happen. Help your body maintain its shape while reducing the “soft” or “flabby” appearance, I know many people worry about that after losing weight too quickly.

Simply Try

Now I know I’ve reiterated this before but, this doesn’t have to become your entire lifestyle overnight. You don’t need to spend hours in the gym, and you certainly don’t need to train like a competitive athlete to experience the benefits. Start with a few resistance training sessions each week, focus on learning proper movement, and allow yourself the opportunity to build confidence over time. This confidence translates to consistency and opens opportunity to progress even further than you’d imagine. Just like your nutrition, your training should support your lifestyle, not become another source of stress.

How to Know If You’re Making the Right Decisions for Your Training?

There’s a lot of decisions you can make when it comes to working out, so how do you know if you’re actually making the right decisions? I don’t think the answer is whether every workout went perfectly, because I can promise you they won’t. I’d rather look at whether the decisions you’re making have a…

What If Exercise Has Never Been Your Thing….

Throughout these articles I’ve talked a lot about resistance training, movement, and overall staying active while losing weight and/or taking a GLP-1. That’s easy if you already enjoy working out, but what if exercise has just never really been your thing? I get it. Honestly I have periods of time where I myself even start…

What Happens When Weight Loss Slows Down?

Starting to see the scale consistently move can be exciting when you’re starting out. Results are actually flying in, clothes might be fitting differently, and it feels like what you’re doing is finally working. Eventually you step on the scale and lo and behold……not much has changed. Maybe that happens again the next week. Suddenly…
