Throughout these articles I’ve talked a lot about resistance training, movement, and overall staying active while losing weight and/or taking a GLP-1. That’s easy if you already enjoy working out, but what if exercise has just never really been your thing? I get it. Honestly I have periods of time where I myself even start to despise it. Maybe you’ve tried going to the gym before and hated it, or maybe exercise and sports were just never a big part of your life. Whether you feel unsure about what to do in the gym or simply haven’t made training a priority before, it’s completely understandable to feel a little out of your element. Losing weight or taking a GLP-1 doesn’t suddenly mean you need to become someone who loves spending hours in the gym, rather it does give us a reason to start figuring out what being active can realistically look like for you.
You Don’t Have to Love It Yet
People, and I’m a part of “people” too so don’t worry, sometimes wait for motivation before they start exercising. They want to find that workout they love or suddenly become excited about going to the gym but that’s not the most realistic when it comes to creating the results your really want. When something is new, uncomfortable, and you’re not very confident doing it yet, why would you automatically love it? Be patient with yourself adapting and give yourself a chance to actually learn. Maybe you start resistance training twice a week or start walking more. Biking and swimming are both fun and impact free! Join a beginner’s class, whether for fitness or a martial art. I can give you a huge list of activities but truly you know what you would and wouldn’t wanna try. You won’t know what you enjoy until you give yourself opportunities to try things.
Start With Why It Matters to You
Throughout a weight loss and/or GLP-1 journey, resistance training can help give your body a reason to preserve muscle while you’re losing weight. Being active can also help you build strength, improve your cardiovascular health, move better, and continue doing the things you enjoy outside of the gym. Exercise doesn’t only exist to help the scale move faster. So instead of asking yourself, “How do I make myself love working out?” Try asking yourself, “What do I want my body to be able to do?” Remember your WHY of why you are doing all this. Keep that goal and want in sight. That answer can give your exercise a the true purpose you’re passionate about.
Find Your Version of Being Active
You don’t need to train the way I train or the way someone on social media tells you to. Just please start somewhere. If you’re completely new to resistance training, learn a few movements and get comfortable with them. If you hate running, don’t convince yourself running is the only way to improve your fitness. If you enjoy walking outside more than using a treadmill, go outside. Try things and allow yourself the space to like and dislike things. Pay attention to what you enjoy and what fits your life, and build from there. You might eventually find something you genuinely look forward to. You might also have days where you still don’t feel like doing it. You don’t have to fall in love with exercise. Find ways to move that you can realistically see yourself continuing to do.
