There’s More in the Tank: Training Endurance for Boxing and Life

Colorado State Champ

Don’t Run Out of Gas, There’s No Gas Station Here!

Introduction: A Shift in Focus

In our last article, we discussed how weight broke the wagon. This week, we’re shifting gears with another quote from my grandfather: “Don’t run out of gas, there’s no gas station here!”

A Lesson from My Grandfather

Whenever I’d start slowing down or getting tired, my grandfather would shout “Don’t run out of gas—there’s no gas station here!” It wasn’t just a phrase to push me forward; it was a mindset, one that I’ve carried with me through boxing and in life. In the ring, there’s no room for running out of gas when it’s time to fight. Poor conditioning and a lack of endurance will get you into trouble fast.

The Mental and Physical Battle

Boxing demands not just physical strength but also mental toughness. The battle is as much in your mind as it is in your body. Some of the greatest fighters in history were so well-conditioned they could go the distance in one fight and still have enough energy to fight again that same night. You must train to exhaustion so that when it’s time to perform, you can push through fatigue, maintaining efficiency even when you feel like there’s nothing left in the tank.

Tapping into Your Reserve Tank

Just like a car has a reserve tank, so do we. Even when you’re running on empty, there’s always a little more fuel left. That’s when you dig in and tap into your reserve. You’re capable of more than you realize—whether in boxing or when life throws its toughest challenges at you.

Pushing My Clients Beyond Their Limits

My clients have often heard me shout, “Don’t run out of gas—there’s no gas station here!” One thing I pride myself on as a coach is pushing each client beyond limits they thought were unattainable. It’s awesome to witness a client discover theres, finding the fire deep within, chipping away and pushing themselves further than they ever imagined. There’s nothing more powerful than tapping into and unleashing your full potential.

What Separates Winners from the Rest

How many times have you felt like you couldn’t take another step, only to find the strength to keep moving? Before you know it you’ve gone another mile! That’s your reserve tank kicking in. The ability to tap into that reserve is what separates winners from the rest.

Apply it to Life: Keep Moving Forward

Apply this to life. When you’re tired, when the challenges of life feel overwhelming, don’t give up! Dig a little deeper and keep pushing forward. Remember, the world won’t wait for you to catch your breath or refuel – So train hard, stay ready and keep unleashing your potential.
