Protein & GLP-1s: Why It Matters

Plate of protein-rich foods including salmon, beans, lentils, nuts, cheese, and chickpeas to support muscle preservation during a GLP-1 weight-loss journey.

One of the first things many people notice after starting a GLP-1 is that they simply aren’t as hungry as they used to be. That’ll be the first symptom that’ll help with weight loss, but it can also make it easier to unintentionally eat less than your body actually needs. Most importantly I’m talking protein becoming especially important. Now please listen on how this doesn’t mean you need to obsess over every gram of protein or completely change the way you eat overnight. Goals are built on trial and consistent trial. It simply means being a little more intentional with your food choices so your body has what it needs while you’re losing weight.

Why The Protein Matters

I talked in the previous article about not all weight loss being the same. The goal isn’t just to lose weight and see some number go down, it’s to lose the body fat you don’t want while preserving as much muscle as possible. Protein helps as the supporter for muscle repair and maintenance throughout that process. Think of it as giving your body the building blocks it needs while everything else is changing. Without enough protein, it becomes more difficult to support the muscle you’re working to preserve.

Keep It Simple

This doesn’t have to be complicated. Instead of trying to completely overhaul your diet, look for small opportunities to include protein throughout the day. There’s so many recipes you can find on the internet with great ingredients with high protein. Maybe it’s adding a protein source to breakfast, choosing a higher protein snack, or making sure each meal includes some form of lean protein. Those small adjustments are often much easier to stick with than making drastic changes all at once.Remember, nutrition should support your lifestyle, not become another source of stress.
