Fuel to Perform: Why Athletes Need Carbs, Not Fear Them

carbs for athletes

Carbohydrates have been unfairly demonized in diet culture, and should not impact an athlete. For athletes, they are the foundation of performance fuel. Whether you’re sprinting down the field, powering through a heavy lift, or enduring a long tournament day, your body primarily relies on carbohydrates for energy. Cutting them out or severely restricting them can lead to a decreased endurance, sluggish performance, and even impair recovery of an injury or post performance.

Carbs are your body’s most efficient energy source since they break down into glucose that fuels your muscles and brain. During intense exercise or performance, your body taps into the stored version of carbohydrates, glycogen, to maintain power and stamina. If those stores start to run low, fatigue sets in faster making it harder to push through workouts at peak intensity. This won’t be an issue if you consistently fuel with quality carbs like whole grains, fruits, and starchy vegetables. It’ll ensure your energy levels remain steady and your recovery stays on track. For athletes, carbs aren’t just a little beneficial, they’re super essential. Without them, there is no support for muscle function, optimized performance, and certainly can lead to burnout. Instead of fearing them, embrace them as the performance fuel they are. A balanced diet including the right amount of carbohydrates will keep you strong, energized, and ready to perform at your best.

Kettlebells and athletic training- Unleash the potential!   I’m often asked what equipment someone should buy for their home gym – a treadmill, a bench press, a hex bar, TRX, etc. My answer is always the same: save your money and invest in kettlebells. I recommend starting with one 25lb, two 35lb, two 45lb, and…

What Boxing Means to Me-Part 5: The Itch to Get Back in the Gym

Part 5: The Itch to Get Back in the Gym In 2018, I was promoted at work. Just ten weeks later, I was demoted for something completely out of my control. It hit me hard… for about ten minutes. Then I did what boxing had always taught me to do, roll with the punches. I…

Unlocking Performance from the Ground Up Pt. 1: Ankles

Your ankles are the first point of contact with the ground, playing a key role in balance, shock absorption, and force transfer. If they’re stiff, unstable, or weak, it doesn’t just affect the ankles, it creates a ripple effect that can lead to issues in your knees, hips, or lower back. At Training Aspects, we…
