Do You Lose Muscle on GLP-1s?

Woman flexing her back and arm muscles, representing muscle preservation during a GLP-1 weight-loss journey.

One of the most common concerns people have about taking GLP-1 drugs is fear whether they’ll lose muscle along with body fat. The short answer is it can happen, but it’s also a lot more in your control than you think. Weight loss often includes a combination of body fat, water, and lean tissue. Because GLP-1 medications reduce appetite, many people naturally eat less throughout the day. While that’s one of the reasons these medications can be effective, eating less also makes it easier to fall short on important nutrients, especially protein.

Why It Happens

Muscle responds to demand. If your body isn’t getting enough nutrition or enough reason to hold onto muscle through resistance training and daily activity, it may begin to lose some lean tissue during weight loss. That doesn’t mean muscle loss is guaranteed. It simply highlights why a well-rounded approach matters. Think of the old saying, “use it or lose it”. This also applied to a focus on prioritizing protein intake, will be a huge component in helping maintain the muscle you want.

Focus on What You Can Control

Rather than worrying about every pound on the scale, focus on the habits that support your long-term success. Eating enough protein, staying physically active, incorporating resistance training, and monitoring your progress can all help support muscle preservation throughout your journey. Chasing the fastest result with weight loss will always create complications along the way, try creating the healthiest result possible through true guidance and manipulation of the results YOU want.
