At TA Boxing, like most gyms, we provide gear for members who don’t have their own. But let’s be honest—every member quickly realizes it’s best to invest in their own personal equipment. Those beat-up, overly used gym gloves just don’t cut it for everyday use. If you’re new to boxing training or thinking about starting, this article highlights the top 7 essentials you’ll need to pack your gym bag with confidence.
1. Hand Wraps
Hand wraps are non-negotiable! Grab at least two pairs for protection and convenience. They act as an extra layer of defense for your wrists and fists. Make it a habit to wash them frequently—every other session is ideal. Don’t be the one showing up with funky-smelling gear!
2. Boxing Gloves
Invest in quality boxing gloves – 16oz gloves are acceptable and versatile for sparring and bag and mitt work. You can also get specialized pairs, like smaller gloves for bag use or sparring-specific ones. Prioritize gloves with ample padding and strong wrist support. Remember, sparring gloves should always be at least 16oz to protect both you and your partner.
3. Boxing Shoes
While sneakers are fine to start, dedicated boxing shoes are a must for consistent training. Wear them only inside the gym to prolong their lifespan, and keep them fresh by airing them out and using a sanitizer spray to combat bacteria and odors.
4. Headgear
Some fighters skip headgear during training—but as a beginner, be smart and protect your head! Choose a headgear that fits securely and is made with quality materials. After each session, hang it up to dry before packing it away in your bag or as soon as time permits.
5. Cup/Groin Protector
Men, protect the family jewels. Accidental low blows can and do happen, and they hurt just as much as intentional ones. Invest in a reliable boxing cup for your safety.
6. Mouthpiece
Boxing isn’t hockey—let’s keep those teeth intact. Get a boil-and-bite mouth guard, mold it for a perfect fit, and always rinse and store it in a clean container after each use.
7. Jump Rope
The jump rope has been a staple in boxing training for generations. It’s lightweight, cost effective, and essential for improving footwork, conditioning, and coordination. Always keep one on standby in your bag.
Bonus – TA Boxing Hoodie
At TA Boxing, our members train in hoodies, adding a layer of discomfort that strengthens and toughens both the body and mind.
Equipping your gym bag with the right gear isn’t just about preparation—it’s about showing respect for the sport, your training partners, and yourself. Ready to lace em up and step into the new year swinging? Fill out our assessment form and schedule your complimentary session today – click here
