There was a person I was working with on improving their movement performance. The client, in their mid-50s, taught me a great lesson.

One morning, my back felt a little tight. I was supposed to get up and meet my 5 AM workout crew, but I decided, “Well… better not push it. I’ll sleep in today.” So I slept in.

That client was my first session of the day. I saw him, greeted him (I know—so polite), and asked how he was feeling. He looked at me and mentioned five things that were bothering him that morning—way more serious than my back issue—but he said, “Don’t let me slack. I want to push it.”

Then he crushed his workout. Even with everything he had going on—and every excuse to cancel—he showed up and gave it his all.

Take away:

100% true story. And while I don’t necessarily condone pushing through pain, I also believe people often find reasons not to succeed.

In this story, I can use myself as the example. My back was bothering me—did I really need to sleep in? Or was going in and just riding the bike an option? I may not have wanted to push to the limit, but what about just getting 1% better?

When a plan changes, it can be hard to adjust expectations. In those moments, remember the vision. What are you trying to achieve?

It’s frustrating to pivot when your mind was set on one thing, but the question remains: is it better to do nothing, or to adjust and get a little better?
