Lower Body Programming for the Elite Hockey Player

A couple weeks ago we broke down Elite upper body programming for a hockey player. Although some of the same principles apply for the lower body, there is still an optimal way to program these principles into your workouts! We’ll break down our top 3 things to include in your lower body hockey program and a sample workout!

Explosiveness

Getting more explosive in your stride is essential to becoming a top tier hockey player! How you build up that explosiveness is the most important aspect. It’s easy to get caught up in all the fancy explosive exercises out there but you need to make sure your body moves as effectively as possible before adding explosiveness to the mix.  That’s where the next programming essential comes in, movement and rotation.

Movement and specifically rotation will amplify your power and speed production automatically by improving your movement capabilities. This in turn will lead to better mechanics and increased performance output. Adding rotational movements to help open up your hips will help greatly improve your injury resiliency and overall longevity to continue to play hockey for as long as you can!

Strength and Stability

Increasing your strength is always a no brainer for any athlete but also maximizing the stability of your joints is going to really help you take your hockey performance to an unprecedented level! Strength and stability of the hip and ankles will greatly improve your knee health. When you don’t have to worry about your knees hurting you can focus on being an unstoppable force on the ice!

Elite Hockey Lower Body Workout

Here is a sample workout including all of the above training focuses. Explosiveness, movement, rotation, strength and stability all in one elite hockey specific workout!

Some of these exercises can be advanced, they can always be regressed or progressed! If you have any questions on regressions or progressions for these exercises don’t hesitate to reach out, we’d be happy to help you out!
