Looking to get in shape :  Train Movement, Not Muscle

Train movement not muscle 3 reasons

“Monday: universal chest day with triceps, cardio core. Tuesday: about 30mins to an hour of cardio. Wednesday: back and biceps. Who knows? Maybe a little forearm action, too!”… If you’ve joined a gym or read a muscle magazine, looked at bodybuilder.com, talked to the average weight lifting enthusiast, you’ve probably heard a similar plan mentioned. Our body is one unit. However, that doesn’t mean that everything moves as one. It means everything moves as one. Confused? Let me clarify. Movement at a particular joint activates a set of muscles. The movement at our ankle activates our lower leg muscles, muscles at the knee activate the upper leg and our hips activate our pelvic region muscles. If you walk, run, skate and don’t activate all three joints (ankle, knee, hip- triple extension) you won’t complete the most efficient movement. Muscles are connected and work in unison, like dominoes… well at least they’re suppose to.

Stop isolating! Isolation exercises are meant for pre-habilitation/rehabilitation and depends on the level of professional physique/ bodybuilder models. Training muscles in isolation is like completing just the red side of a Rubiks cube, you have only completed one side of the puzzle!

Movement training will not only get you to look good as you wish but it will also help you move and feel as you’ve always desired ;-)!

3 Reasons to train movement:

1.When running from robots or needing to be competitive.

Training for movement allows you to feel confident in your abilities. If you have a doomsday personality, know you will be able to out run, out swim and out climb the majority of people. Remember, if you’re being chased you only need to be faster than the next person. Joking- but it is true ;)!

2. Stop feeling 68 and start feeling like an athlete:

The days of poor technique, high pressure on joints, loss of movement (Because it is true! If you don’t use it, you lose it!), all will take a toll on your body. If you’re in your mid 30’s, you shouldn’t move like you’re twice your age. When you leave the gym, your knees shouldn’t hurt, back shouldn’t be tight, shoulder shouldn’t be sore. That is your body sending you signals for help. “Help Me!! We need to change something!”

Work on body weight exercises. If you can’t perform a proper technique push up, a non-arching  squat or  pull ups, why are you using weights? Yes, Weights are fun. Use them but use them with the proper movement of the joints. Don’t use a bar and do pull downs behind your head. Our bodies are meant to move as a team of power! Not just a bunch of individual muscles.

3. Perform

Carrying grocery bags, playing a sport, picking up a small child, getting off the floor are some daily activities. There isn’t one single movement in the example where only one body part is specifically activated during the movement. Soo… Why would you train your body that way?

Allow yourself the ability to enjoy life, not just get through it. If your friends are going on a ski trip, it’s ok if you don’t want to go. What isn’t ok, is if you do want to go but are afraid that you won’t be able to physically keep up.

If you focus on training movement, you will burn more calories, activate more muscles at one time, and allow your body to work well as a unit.movement training allows for the greatest mobility which in turn will get rid of back pain, knee pain and all those “arthritis” problems. Training movement is the way to not only solve the red side of the training Rubik’s Cube but all of the sides of the training Rubik’s Cube.

Can a genetic test help you lose weight?

Can a genetic test help you lose weight?

A proven weight loss system?

Can a genetic test help you lose weight?

No more guessing! Take a simple DNA test, swab your cheek and find the diet for you! Dieters can buy a test for $170, the test will give you a diet blue print for your genetic make up.  A study conducted by the company “Interleukin Genetics” and presented at the 2010 meeting of the American Heart Association found women whose diets matched their genetic test results lost two to three times more weight than those whose diets were supposedly incompatible with their genes.

Sounds promising?

You won’t find many people who will argue against genetic testing, to find a specific diet that will keep you healthier, greater energy and overall take the guess work out of the process. However, not yet!

Scientists are only beginning to uncover the genes involved in obesity and weight loss. We are far from the time when this information will be useful to everyone, said Dr. Lee Kaplan, director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Weight Center in Boston.

Interleukin Genetics, started selling their weight-management genetic test in 2009.  it has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The company says it reviewed scientific studies and identified four genes related to body weight, body mass index or body fat that had also been implicated in how people responded to diet and exercise. These genes are involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates and the absorption or metabolism of fat in the body.

To buy or not to buy?

If you feel like you’ve tried everything and you don’t know where to turn, sure try it. There is also the metabolic typing diet you can look into.

However,

As Dr. Kaplan stated, there isn’t enough information. The best way to lose weight and get fit is to find the proper guidance. Do your research and locate a personal trainer who has experience, the updated knowledge and most importantly cares about your goal as much if not more than you do! Begin personal training, learn the fundamentals and make it a lifestyle change!

So you are saying I shouldn’t buy?

Not yet! Give the researchers a little more time to find, analyze and connect the pieces together. We live in such a fast paced world, that we put more value on convenience than, our health. Focus in and though any weigh loss journey or getting fit adventure takes work. To achieve the things you want and the things you may need, working hard is just a part of the journey. The journey is the reward!

Healthy habits for fitness successs

Diet soda the healthy choice?

Healthy choice, Diet soda?

Healthy habits for fitness successs

I was looking over various diet articles on the internet when I came across this one: New study is a wake up call for soda drinkers. The first study has many holes in it, such as their point that a person who drinks two cans of soda gains more weight than a person who doesn’t.  Our bodies, with age, will increase body fat automatically, especially if we’re not health-conscious.  To compare a soda drinker to someone who doesn’t drink soda takes nothing into consideration regarding lifestyle.

The second part of this article talks about artificial sweeteners/aspartame.  I have beenGet in shape, lose weight and lose body fat. Body fat loss is important. telling my clients to stay away from these products for a very long time!  There are controversial studies on both sides for these products, but staying away from them is common knowledge. Commonly known reasons include the effects of caffeine, the fact that soda cleans pavements, and the effects of aspartame. Let’s go a little deeper into the issue of soda. Let’s break down some basic ingredients in soda.

Personal trainer analysis #1

Increased phosphorus levels– too much phosphorus in your body leads to a reduction in calcium and magnesium, which are vital for a normal heart rate, nerve and muscle function, blood clotting, good bones and teeth.  It can lead to tooth loss, damage your gums, cause osteoarthritis in adults and bone fractures in adolescents.  Additionally, caffeine may also aid in loss of calcium.

Personal trainer analysis #2

Sodium benzoat – this is used in many brands of soda pop as a preservative. Although it is not considered to be harmful, it causes hyperactivity in children. The main concern with sodium benzoate is when it combines with citric or ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to form benzene. Benzene is a known carcinogen which increases the risk of leukemia and other cancers. The reaction to form benzene is increased in the presence of heat or light.

Personal trainer analysis #3

Artificial coloring – there have been connections with cancer-causing chemicals. I realize this statement could be made for almost any product, so let’s look at it from a different view. Why add extra chemicals into the system which are unneeded?

There are many studies which will send you on a wild goose chase trying to figure out what is true and what is not with certain chemicals.  The jury may still be out on the effects of Aspartame but keep in mind that besides weight gain, soda has certain ingredients which will affect your body on the smallest level.  You are only as strong as your weakest link.
Limit the amount of soda you drink in a week and increase the amount of water and teas you consume. Add fresh pieces of fruit into your water, and make your tea the night before and put it in the refrigerator. Create the habit and feel the difference.
